Writing Articles Faster

How long does it take you to write a short article? 30 minutes … 60 minutes? More? When all is said and done, it does not really matter how long it takes so long as you enjoy the process and the outcome. Some people are naturally slow and cautious – they like to make sure everything is just right before launching their work onto the world.

I agree with that. But productivity can suffer. If I was a farmer would I want to sell 100 top grade carrots or 1000 slightly inferior ones?

The answer is – it depends who was buying them. I certainly take more than an hour sometimes when I am writing for professional publications. Some documents and reports can take a whole day if you factor in the extensive research that has to be done. It's horses for courses. Some of my research papers have taken weeks to form but then again, research takes time and accuracy is the key.

For straightforward articles, especially ones giving an opinion, an hour should be more than adequate. As you get more experience this can easily be reduced to 30 minutes or less. Most articles I write take me 10 minutes at the most.

The audience you write for will, to some extent, dictate the style and therefore the length of the articles you write. A few ways to be more concise in your writing is to use short sentences, concise paragraphs, note form style and to utilize bullet points.

Soon you will develop a flow and a rhythm which will be replicable to future articles. Your speed and accuracy will increase along with your experience.
