Writing a Book – How to Stay Motivated

Motivation is a major issue when writing a major piece such as a book or eBook. You need motivation to get started. You need motivation to finish your book. And you need motivation for every step in between. After all, if you do not keep at it you'll never finish your book or eBook. And you're going to be writing for at least one week solid. And no one ever claimed that was an easy task.

So how do you stay motivated?

In this article, I'm going to give you five techniques you can use to keep your motivation engaged while writing a book or an eBook. Now of course, there are other alternatives. Some of which work well. And some of which are less than optimum. Ultimately, the only thing that matters is that they work for you. It's personal. The only thing that matters is that it works for you. So here are four techniques that have worked for me.

1. A sign over the computer screen

One of the largest issues with maintaining motivation is that people forget why they are writing a book. There was something that motivated you to begin. But as time goes on, you will forget what it is. You need to be reminded. Most reporters spend a great deal of time in front of the computer screen. In fact, if you are writing a book and expecting to finish it, you pretty well have to be in front of the screen most of the time. So make use of that time and remind yourself through a sign saying in a single phrase what you hope to accomplish. "Writing means I will … be able to eat" and so on.

2. Screen saver

Strictly speaking screen savers are not needed any more. They`re from a time when the computer screen would remain active for long periods. Now the green sensitive computer manufacturers shut screens and computers off after a period ofactivity. However, every operating system still has screen savers built in. The ability to display a series of pictures is a typical type of screen saver. So use yours to display a series of pictures illustrating why you need to write. It`ll help motivate you – at least until the screen goes black.

3. Motivational Desktops

All computers have the ability to customize the desktop. More modern operating systems such as Apple OSX or Windows 7 also have the ability to change the desktop on the fly. This ability can be used to create a slideshow of stimulating pictures. Effectively, your desktop will become a changing billboard of motivation for writing a book.

4. Friends

You can not work all the time. It sounds strange but sometimes taking a break can be the best motivator. Have some friends who know why you are writing a book. Get together with them periodically just to talk and relax. If you are having problems staying motivated, a cluster of friends who will remind you of why you are writing a book can be the greatest motivational technique of all.
